How AI works in the scorecard

How does the new failure score work for Belgium?

Altares has developed a unique layered scoring system where AI enhances our traditional scorecard so that you can make credit decisions with even greater confidence. Our AI layer analyses complex patterns, providing new insights into the risk factors that can lead to bankruptcy. This innovation gives you a head start in identifying the opportunities and risks when doing business with companies, suppliers and individuals in Belgium.

What is the role of AI?

AI does not stand alone. Rather, it is embedded between two other layers. The logic layer drives the AI and ensures reliable analytics. The AI layer then categorises companies into risk segments. Finally, the scorecard layer translates these analyses into concrete failure scores. This layered structure combines the power of AI with the reliability of traditional scoring for which Altares has been known for years.

The future is here

The most accurate failure prediction ever

The new scorecard continuously analyses and monitors four key factors in 1.5 million Belgian companies: general business characteristics, financial strength, payment behaviour and stronger risk signals.

Identification of risk patterns

Any risk assessment starts with an analysis of the fundamental characteristics of a company. By doing this with our AI technology, we can identify specific patterns that are typical of healthy or, conversely, vulnerable companies.

AI spots financial risks earlier

By combining and analysing financial indicators with our AI technology, we generate a complete picture of a company's financial stability. This analysis enables us to identify potential risks at an early stage, before they become visible in traditional ratings.

Reliable insight into payment behaviour

A company's historical and current payment behaviour are indicators of its financial strength. By incorporating past and present in our assessement, we get a reliable picture of a company's creditworthiness.

Signalling of legal events

We continuously monitor legal events and other signals that may indicate financial problems. Our AI layer enables us to recognise these signals earlier and identify potential issues before they become critical.

The future of credit scoring is here. Are you ready?

Our new Belgium Scorecard combines the power of AI with our proven expertise. Not yet a customer of Altares, and you want to see how this innovation can improve your credit decisions?

FAQ on Belgium Scorecard

Our AI-layered scoring is precisely designed to increase reliability. By combining the computing and analytical power of AI with our traditional scorecards, we bring you the best of both worlds.

The calculation model has been validated over multiple time periods (2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023) to confirm its stability and reliability. We can show you validation results if you so wish. In addition, Dun & Bradstreet regularly monitors performance to ensure the predictive value of the scores.

The score specifically predicts the likelihood that a company will, in the next 12 months, seek legal relief from its creditors or cease operations without paying all its creditors in full. The Dun & Bradstreet Data Cloud fuels this analysis.

The D&B Failure Score is designed to:

  • (Largely) automate financial risk management for greater efficiency
  • Process large volumes of transactions more quickly
  • Enable consistent decision-making across the entire organization
  • Reduce the costs of full application and annual risk assessments
  • Apply scores across an entire portfolio to quickly identify risks and opportunities for customers and suppliers, both domestic and international
  • Manage collection resources with prioritized actions for overdue payments
  • Comply with laws and regulations by ensuring timely, consistent, and objective account-level decision-making

Unlike 'black box' AI systems, we provide full insight into the factors that determine a failure score. The failure score calculation is based on a comprehensive set of company data. The score looks at key characteristics such as the business sector, company size, company age, payment behaviour and financial performance. Information about management and possible legal events is also taken into account.

All this data is processed by an advanced system that uses artificial intelligence and statistical techniques. Our system has been developed and tested on the strength of data from more than 1.4 million Belgian companies. Business and data experts check the results to ensure that the score matches the Belgian market. The result is a reliable prediction of the likelihood that a company will face financial difficulties within 12 months.

The integration of AI into the process allows us to analyse far more data and identify more complex and subtle patterns. With 21 different scorecards (when formerly there were 2), we can assess risks in much more detail. This results in a 25% higher acceptance rate for a constant risk. As the bankruptcy prediction becomes more accurate, more companies are classified as non-risky. This allows you to do business with more companies without increasing your risk.
